Germany’s Meat Consumption Falls by 18% as Plant-Based Diets Boom

The Downwards Trend of Eating Meat

In the past 30 years, Germany has seen a significant decline in meat consumption, with an 18% drop in per capita consumption from 63.3 kg in 1991 to 51.7 kg in 2022. This downward trend is driven by growing awareness of environmental, health, and ethical concerns related to meat production, and the increasing popularity of plant-based diets.

The most noticeable decrease has been in pork consumption, with a 22% drop between 1991 and 2021. The market for plant-based alternatives has experienced rapid growth, with sales of vegan and vegetarian products increasing by 39% between 2018 and 2020 alone!

This shift in consumer behaviour has benefited the environment, as reduced meat consumption helps reduce air pollution and improves ocean health. It also has a positive impact on public health, with studies linking high levels of meat consumption to an increased risk of heart disease, cancer, and other chronic illnesses.

As plant-based diets continue to gain traction in Germany, citizens have the opportunity to create a more sustainable and compassionate future.

"Reducing meat consumption is not only good for the environment, but it's also a step towards a healthier lifestyle... we hope to inspire more people to make the transition to a plant-based diet."

Germany’s 18% decline in meat consumption over the past three decades serves as an inspiration for individuals and nations around the world to embrace more sustainable and ethical food choices. By reducing meat consumption and incorporating more plant-based foods into our diets, we can create a healthier, kinder, and more sustainable future for all living beings on this planet.
